CANNIBALISM AS AN INDICATION OF POLLEN INSUFFICIENCY IN HONEYBEES:
Cannibalism is a common method of population control and protein conservation
in animals (Cloudsley-Thompson, 1965) and is particularly prevalent in termites
and social Hymenoptera (Wilson, 1971). Honeybees are known to eat eggs and
larvae under adverse conditions (Myser, 1952), and to restrict brood rearing when
nutritionally adequate pollen is unavailable (Haydak, 1970) or improperly placed
in the brood nest (Taber, 1973). In addition, cannibalism is a method of sex-ratio
control (Woyke, 1963).
Comment: Easy solution to the problem of too many male types.
