>Funny they should mention - I know a bit about the Canaries

That post brought back some memories as we too have been to the Canaries
quite a number of times. Very convenient to the UK - until Covid!

Tenerife is a bit too commercialised for us these days - but we certainly
had a wonderful holiday on La Gomera, a place like no other that I know. I
have just been scrolling though some of our photographs. The scenery is
certainly stunning, especially up in the mountains where there are tree
heathers 12' high or more. A striking feature up there as well was the
total silence when there was no wind, no people, no traffic. But it was the
people that we met that made it so good. We hired a car in advance and were
told 'it will be in the harbour with the key under the mat on the driver's
side'; we picked it up on the Thursday and they did not even ask us to sign
or pay for anything until the following Monday!
The small guest house where we stayed was run by an equally trusting young
couple: 'just help yourself to anything and pay later'.
I think you are right about the bees being Carniolan derived Jim; we found
them to be very good tempered. But what surprised us were the places where
hives were put - I am certainly glad that I do not have to carry out honey
from some of them. The ultimate was a beekeeper who showed us his hives
part way up what could only be described as a cliff! We struggled to get
ourselves up and down without carrying anything!

Best wishes
