Until well into the nineteenth century many new phenomena regarding bees were first noted by expert beekeepers rather than by professional scientists. This disproportion is easily explainable given the number of skilled beekeepers who were involved in what was, owing to the commercial importance of honey and wax in the period, a financially rewarding enterprise.
