We run a commercial beekeeping operation, using IPM to manage varroa.
Our IPM "pyramid" is based upon breeding for resistant bee stock.
Then we use the biotechnical methods of drone brood trap frames (removed
only once in spring), splitting all our hives, and creating an induced
brood break.
We monitor for parasite load.
We use "biologicals" (oxalic, formic, thymol) for treatment, each at their
most appropriate time of season, and applied when indicated by (very low)
treatment thresholds).
We have not needed to use a synthetic miticide since 2001.
