There do seem to be various current pathways towards "sustainability"
(or profits) involving use of locale, scale, migration. One could get
into semantics, philosophies, and deep thoughts regarding the meanings
of sustainability, but better to avoid the quagmires.
For the described package reliant system with such high honey
production and a semi-retail outlet, it could possibly be more
sustainable (profitable?) to extract all the honey, treat and feed
sugar syrup to all the colonies, and attempt to overwinter them.
Theoretically. But all beekeeping is local, and one of the hardest
things to predict is the future.
