Despite these advantages, acceptance of insecticides formulated with B. thuringiensis has been disappointing, primarily because they have not proven as effective under field conditions as laboratory tests have predicted.

This statement misses the point that field effectiveness, as viewed by growers, follows a somewhat different definition.  BT takes time to replicate in the host, before it kills it.  The growers tend to expect a rapid kill, such as can be achieved with chemical pesticides.
