OMG, who can keep up! Our bees don't get Nosema now, they get Vairimorpha.
For the microsporidia, the phenotypic, ecological, ultrastructural
and developmental characters do not provide the information needed to
develop a reliable phylogeny and an acceptable taxonomy. We suggest
that for taxa such as the microsporidia where “traditional” morphological
characters do not yield acceptable taxonomies, molecular characters
and character states must be the primary criteria for defining
taxa. Here we present two very distinct clades, which we now consider
to be the genera Nosema (phylogenetically related to Nosema bombycis)
and Vairimorpha (phylogenetically related to Vairimorpha necatrix).
