What gizmo?  I assume you're talking about the camera/laser zapper.   You tossed me a curve ball with the comments about a patent related to something totally different.
As per patents, if  they have filed a disclosure with the patent office, you may not see it listed.   The inventers have one year in the US to complete and file a formal patent application.
Given that they have made public statements about the system, announced an award to further the work, and have even posted pictures, I assume they've at least filed a disclosure to the US Patent Office, may even have a Patent Pending.  It can take years for a patent to be formalized.
If they have not filed anything with the patent office, then they have effectively put this in the public domain.It has been disclosed to the public.  If they have notified the US Patent office, the clock for filing is ticking.
If they want to patent in Europe, that's an even shorter grace period.
