I once worked for a major outfit whose hives were set up that way. The 
benefit was you worked the hives from the 'back', moving along the row 
easily from hive to hive. The disadvantage was that the frame at the 
entrance was a sacrificial frame in that the bees tended to chew it and 
not really use it. As they used 1/2" sides they managed to get 10 frames 
in a box so still had the normal 9 frames of brood below the excluder,
