It's not happened for a few years now but in times past, at the annual Beekeepers' Summer School at Gormanston College, Ireland, someone, after lunch, would lead a group of us around the golf course carrying a long fishing rod to which was attached a tiny phial of queen pheromone. It nearly always attracted lots of drones.
Recently DARG, the Devon Apicultural Research Group, has tried a couple of times, using a lure dangling from a balloon. There was no success close the the East Devon BKA apiary at Axminster where we had our meeting but a couple of miles away on a hilltop there were lots of drones attracted.
