In desert areas in which trees are only near water, every cavity may house
a colony.
I once also was called to remove a colony from a barn wall.  There were
four separate colonies in that wall, well separated by studs. (I'm familiar
enough with bee removals to know that a single colony may occupy more than
one stud bay if there is a small passage available.  This was not the case).
