After all the reports of condensing hives I decided to give it an
experimental try on my sideline operation. 92% overwintering success this
year. In some of my colonies they had just 2 inches of holes and no top
vent but experienced no negative effects.
So during winter their ventilation needs do not require a top vent with
match sticks. Just insulation and a zero mite count by October.
