I fall into this category. I maintain 3 small yards and keep 2 strong colonies in each (honey producers) with a couple of floater colonies/nucs. It allows me to move my 5-6 frame mating nucs (I keep them strong due to short season) to which ever yard. I still have 2 x 2019 queens that are still full out laying. I do plan on replacing them in 2 weeks but keeping them in 6 frame poly boxes to overwinter. I keep 6-8 strong doubles/singles and 2-3 nucs in my management approach. I loan out the 7th or 8th colonies to newbees who want to practice. We spilt the honey and I mentor them along and get them to do most of the management!!
Having a second yard is key for anyone considering raising their own queens/bees. I own the land in one and have permission to setup year round yards on other peoples property. Help with haying and give them honey in return :)
