> Getting back to Carni vs Italian, I thought the article about Baton Rouge's bee breeding stock would put that to rest. 50 years ago they declared US bees a hodgepodge, and the only thing that's changed is that Russian hodgepodge bees (пчелиная солянка) and Africanized bees (abelhas assassinas) have been added to the mix.
One is forced to wonder if any consideration has been given to any of the literature published, or to any of the conferences held during the past 2 decades.
I’ve mentioned two people who produced specific unique bee traits of value in this thread. Here are partial listings of the awards and grants they have gotten as a direct result of that work:
Sue Cobey:

Marla Spivak:

Clearly, they have been doing something recognized as being of tangible value to the industry.
A MacArthur grant (Marla was awarded one) is a pinnacle of achievement for anyone in the sciences. There is simply no higher complement possible, as Nobels are routinely shared and award for specific work, while a MacArthur is for one's entire body of work. To contrast, Arno Penzias and Bob Wilson got a Nobel for discovering that unwanted "noise" from a radio-telescope was caused by deuterium left over from the "big bang", and thereby proved that the "big bang" happened. So yes, a Nobel prize, but no MacArthur grant.
We would pinch 100% of (unmarked) mongrel queens when we found them, and replace them with pedigree queens that we marked. This was yet another factor in assuring consistent profitability, as consistent stock genetics is a foundational concept in any livestock operation.
