Gosh, I can't be the only beekeeper to keep both a handful of "retired" queens and a few queen cages double-ziplocked in the deep freeze, to use as a temporary replacements to keep a queenless colony from descending into chaos, can I?

I have no idea what pheromone(s) might be in play, and I sold my VOC-collection "Yaeger pump" long ago, so I'm in no position to test, but when a queenright colony is not possible, a dead queen will do for a short period in a pinch, and even a zip-lock bagged and frozen wooden 3-hole queen cage will help. Its not a pheromone lure, but it is close.
