We do get deep snow here some years and much drifting closing roads etc. Many years ago I had bees at the back of a nearby farm and following a snowing/drifting event walked to my apiary, using my snowshoes, to check the 10 hives there on a bright sunny day in early spring. I discovered that the hives were not there, stolen or whatever, until I noticed the bees emerging from a hole in the snow cover. I was standing on top of the hives, where both entrances had been ‘closed’ by the snow but the heat of the hive had melted a cavity around each hive. All 10 hives survived being buried.
