A definition was provided in that post as "profitable operations that can pay salaries and put kids through college".
No attempt was made to address the one-person small scale operation, which of course can seem profitable if the person's time is not accounted for, moreso when cash is accepted in payment, without any of that tedious government tax paperwork.

I've only been in the R&D biz since the 1970s, but my colleagues and I have waited in vain for a chance to “sell out” to massively wealthy shadowy interests, but no one ever calls, so everyone crestfallenly continues to apply for miniscule grants and stipends to support their work.
