" Have the aerodynamics of vehicles changed resulting in less insects hitting the windscreen?"
Without question the aerodynamics of newer model cars are very different than 25 years ago. The changes are to smooth the air flow over the car and have been responsible for a significant part of the improved gas mileage we can get today. The car I drive will get 42 mpg at 70 mph at an air temp of 80 deg F for example. It is heavier and has more HP than the last car I had that would only get about 33mpg under the same conditions.
But, that smoother air flow does not mean bugs will just go past your car without striking it. A bug weighs millions of times what an air molecule weighs. A great illustration is to drive your car thru a very heavy fog and notice that today's cars windshield still gets wet. The water droplets in fog are way less mass than the smallest insect, yet have enough mass to penetrate the boundary layer just fine.
