> Has any research ever looked at the mite levels in these winter nests? Do
we understand how long a mite can live parasitically on adult bees during
the brood breaks?
Varroa's original host, Apis cerana, may only rear drone brood for a short
period in a year.
That means that varroa evolved to be able to survive solely on very hostile
adult bees for nearly a year.
No surprise that they can survive your winter.
Daily natural mortality rate of adult mites is around a half a percent per
day.
