I remember reading an article in ABJ a few years back about someone that
mated queens in AHB prone areas. Their solution was to put all their
mating nucs on a small kiddie train type device. During normal mating hours
the train was inside a shack. Late in the afternoon the train would move
outside. By then most of the drones in the area had already returned to
their host hives, but the virgins and drones that were from hives on the
train were forced to perform mating flights later in the day than they
normally would, ensuring the virgins mated with the drones you wanted. The
process seemed to work well for that person. No clue about the science or
validity behind it though.
Does anyone else remember that article?
