"cane sugar is preferable to beet sugar for feeding bees"
Old wive's tale nonsense. Cane sugar and beet sugar are identical chemically. Both are sucrose, which is also the main sugar found in most nectars. The only difference between cane and beet sugar is a minor difference in the ratio of carbon 12 isotope to carbon 13 isotope as a result of beets following what is called the C3 photochemical path to fix carbon dioxide while cane follows the C4 photochemical path. Most nectar producing plants follow the C3 pathway just like beets. The only possible reason to pick one over the other is if you are purposely adulterating your honey by adding sugar. In that case it makes sense to use beet sugar as you eliminate the chance of getting caught by an isotope ratio analysis which is a pretty easy analysis to do.
