A tiny sample (one hive over about three years): I use a slatted super
shim with a bored entrance in the front middle; this shim is sometimes
at the top of the hive, and sometimes just above the brood nest. I've
never seen it propolized, nor the bottom entrance.
Most years the bees have generally preferred to use the bottom
entrance, but with a significant number of them coming and going
from the extra entrance. Last summer for some unknown reason, they
decided they preferred to use the extra entrance, and I saw much less
traffic from the bottom.
