Many of these knots and hitches were invented when the only rope was hemp. I think that some of them do not hold as well with modern 'plastic' ropes, so we should be very careful before we put our trust in them.
My own preference for the wagoners' hitch is to use the slip knot version as that works no matter what the rope is made from.
