It seems unfortunate to me that the meaning of a debate has become so lost
in modern usage. A debate being "A formal discussion on a particular topic
in a public meeting or legislative assembly, in which opposing arguments
are put forward." In other words a system to present different ideas and
positions following a set of rules. A discussion is not horribly different
in that it is a "the action or process of talking about something in order
to reach a decision or to exchange ideas." In either case, there are
established rules of discourse to maintain a civil and productive exchange.
