Read the the studies, look at the data, see why they were done and who financed them.
Is this a popular topic and one sure to get money and reputation for minimum effort and initiative. Then be suspicious.
Check if the conflict statements are credible and if the studies are ghost-written.. In some areas that is the rule not the exception.
Then, if it is still worth your time, compare the survivors to other such studies.
If there is only one study, note the conclusions, but wait for confirmation before you go out on the ice.
Science runs on doubt, not belief.. Religion runs on belief.
