It is in the queen's bloodlines' best interest to be successfully
superseded by a daughter carrying half of her genes, rather than her colony
going queenless.  Thus the "honest" pheromonal signal.

But I'm confused by an observation by Dr. Jim Bach some years ago that it
doesn't seem like we see the same sorts of retinues around queens as we
used to.
But if that's the case, it would seem that queens would be superseded more
readily.
