Pete, your description of your late development of peanut allergy got me to
do some investigation.
To my surprise, adult onset of food allergies is apparently fairly common:

If this is the case, that makes me wonder whether those of us who don't
react much to stings are really at low risk for an unexpected allergic
reaction.
