Personally, I wouldn't call them "hard wired" -- like a thermostat; rather, they use "fuzzy logic" -- like optical character recognition. What triggers supersedure cells and queen supersedure, in my view, has not been determined unequivocally. Loss of the queen on the mating flight is a separate issue, that's left up to fate.
