We had a long thread about bee drinking water here in early 2018;
if you search the list archives for the date March 20, 2018, you'll
find my posts "Spiking bee water: compendium of responses", and
"Spiking bee water: a summary", which, as I recall, do also discuss
the issue you raise.
What I'm using now is pine cones and spruce cones; they fall all
over my lawn anyway, so I might as well put them to good use.
When they get too slimy I toss them into the compost and pick some
more up off the ground.
