I use mostly 7 frame hives and have found that my local carni mutts
utilize that space efficiently. Their winter cluster tends to be about 7
frames worth, and, as it moves upward, they don't leave much food in the
outside frames, so pretty much all of the food gets consumed. I use 3
7frame deeps for wintering.
