> In accordance with my instructions from the Patent Office I arrived in the country of the Italian Lakes in April, 1859, and commenced searching for Italian bees. I wandered about among the hills of this delightful region and examined many hives, but could not feel satisfied that any of them were of the pure Ligurian stock. The Italians are not a careful people, and it is difficult to find among them sufficient knowledge or skill to keep pure any kind of stock.
