The suggestion has been made that they do not do this in natural settings. ... We suggest that scouts from natural swarms are attracted to existing colonies by the presence of Nasonov pheromones ..."
As many of us know from experience, an empty hive in the midst of an apiary is a prime target for a house-hunting swarm exiting one of its neighboring "closely placed" hives.
