It's called tanging a swarm. In bygone days, in the days of skeps, children
were assigned to watch skeps for emerging swarms, and were then assigned to
tang the swarm. The noise making was a way to lay claim to the emerging
swarm. It was believed that the noise was the cause of the swarm
effectively settling. Cause and effect or coincidence?
