Self-selection of analgesic
The presence of pain may be inferred if an animal is given the opportunity to self-select an analgesic and does so (Colpaert 1987). Danbury et at (1997, 2000) have used analgesic self-selection experiments to assess pain due to lameness in broiler chickens. In these experiments, lame broilers have self-selected both morphine and the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) carprofen.
