I have used "dummy/follower" boards in eight frames boxes for 40+ years,
following, and appreciating, the advice of one of my first mentors and C.
C. Miller's  "Fifty Years Among the Bees."   For some reason eight frame
boxes that I have encountered have extra room, not enough for a ninth
frame, but just enough for a 3/4 inch dummy/follower board that is safely
removed at the start of each inspection, giving room for separating frames.
I use all eight frame mediums (for the sake of my back), without queen
excluders, because I found in both Pennsylvania and Utah that the outside
frames of a ten frame box were often not completely used. I remove any
honey frames one at a time and leave any brood combs behind, filling in
with drawn comb.
