This method was used by most beekeepers
in New Zealand up until 1950,
but extensive surveys showed that the
overall incidence of AFB was about 2%
of hives per year (Winter, 1950). However,
once a policy to bum all infected
bees was adopted, AFB levels were reported
to have dropped below 0.5% of
hives annually (Winter, 1954).
