From what I have read, 99% of the info on honey bee characteristics is anecdotal. Aside from "Biometrical Studies on Variation and Races of the Honey Bee (Apis mellifera L.)" (Alpatov 1929) there is little to be found in the literature. When I hear people compare, for example, Carniolans and Italians, I have to laugh. About the only difference is the color, like yellow and black Labrador retrievers.
