> I split all my strong hives in late April to avoid swarming and figured on a bust of a honey year
That's just it. All of my hives made it through the winter, and I made no splits. Then the spring flow came on and I had to put on all my supers, plus some I acquired.
The nectar flow was during the Elaeagnus and Lonicera, both of these are everywhere around here. The bulk of it was gathered before the Robinia came into bloom.
People are all talking about black locust, but I am skeptical that much honey is made from that source around here. The trouble is: the spring honey all seems to be water-white and almost tasteless. Go figure
In any case, I have to get it off before the basswood blooms (Tilia americana, around July 4th in these parts). There is little leaf basswood in town, which blooms in June, but it's mostly out of the range of my hives.
