Dutch for "bee" is "bij." There is also the Dutch word, "bijwerken," which can be translated as "updating," so it occurred to me that due to the social nature of spinning bees and quilting bees, the word may be derived not from the work that was being done but what was also being done -- gossiping -- "updating." Just my 2 cents.
