It looks to me like chewed down pupae as you'd see with VSH behavior in a
colony heavily infested with varroa.  It's early in the year for that, but
I'd recommend an alcohol wash.  There was something about those pupae the
workers didn't like.  They might even have been damaged during the last
hive inspection.   Hemolymph turns black when exposed to O2, so that's what
the ashy stuff is.
