A common comment is that there is a lot of lumber being rented, rather than
bees.
The unfortunate fact is that growers must be able to show a receipt for the
rental of two hives per acre in order to collect on crop insurance.  But
there is no provision that those hives be inspected for the presence of
bees.
It amazes me how little interest most almond growers have in the hives that
they pay such high rental rates for, or to learn anything about pollination
in general.  Only a proportion have their rented hives inspected for
strength.

It's difficult for us who invest the money to supply strong colonies, to
compete against empty, or near empty, hives.
