I did what I call a fly back split where I moved a hive from the middle to the very end of a row of hives. It was funny watching the bees returning to what used to be the end hive going to the new hive. They would get to the new hive entrance, reconize thier mistake and fly to the one next to the end hive which is where they were from. So what it seemed to be is that they were reconizing thier placement in the line more then some item that stuck out on the hive they came from. I know a one time thing is not much of a test but it was very clear what was happenning.
Cheers
