Subject: Re: [BEE-L] Intriguing Way To Kill "90% of Phoretic Mites"
I know that the Combplex system exists as a lab bench-top prototype. How
they intend to implement it inside a beehive and the cost per hive per year
are questions I'd like to see addressed.
I'm really hoping to get them to the Technology Field Demonstration Camp
(July 12) and the 4th International Workshop on Bee and Hive (Colony)
Monitoring in Missoula, MT, (July 13-14, 2020)
These two events will follow the 43rd Annual Conference of the Western
Apicultural Society (WAS), in Missoula, July 9-11.
We are calling this three event meeting: 43rd WAS, Tech Demo Camp, and
Monitoring Conference, the 2020 Montana Bee Summit.
Frank Linton and I are organizing a Technology Demonstration Field Camp.
The objective of the Field Camp is so that everyone will have a chance to
see what some of these new bee management tools and technologies look like
and how they perform. It gives the researchers and companies a chance to
showcase their technologies. The Field Camp is scheduled for a Sunday
(July 12) at the Univ of MT (UM) research apiary. It will be open to
attendees of the WAS and or the International Monitoring Conference, as
well as to regional beekeepers (one does not have to be a member of WAS or
the Monitoring Group to attend).
Frank and I are also organizing the 4th International Monitoring
Conference, which will be on the UM campus following the Field Camp. The
Monitoring Conference will take place on Monday and Tuesday (July 13 and
14). This Conference will allow technology companies and research groups
to talk about their innovations, show proof-of-concept data, see what
others are doing, socialize and network.
Full disclosure, I'm the current President of WAS. Jaylene Naylor (UM) is
the WAS Program Chair Frank Linton and I are organizing the Field Camp
and Chair the 4th International Monitoring Conference.
More information about these events can be found on the WAS website (
westernapiculturalsociety.org). Registration for any or all events, hotel
reservations, are available via links from WAS to an Eventbrite site for
the Montana Summit. Please read my President's message for a better
overview of the planned activities.
As of today, the WAS program and list of Speakers is more or less set and
is listed on the WAS website.
Frank and I are still working on the Field Camp and Monitoring Conference
presenters.
This morning, I had a list of 45 speakers who have been invited. About 30,
from as far away as Bulgaria and New Zealand, have confirmed. We need to
publish the full list of presenters at the Demonstration and Monitoring
Conferences before April 10, so that it can appear in the May WAS Journal.
Frank and I would like to see any new technology for bee management and
research, whether a stand alone device like a Doppler bee counter, a
hive-system like a scalehive with sensors, a hive setup containing 40
colonies with sensors and robotics, a smartphone app, a bee management
software program, or a bee or beehive tracking system in Missoula. We want
to see these technologies demonstrated on, in, or with our UM bee colonies
on July 12. We've a research apiary with a 2 m security fence and AC
power, with large, open fields adjacent. In other words, we will have
bees, places to park, and places to gather.
Then we hope to see everyone stay over after the Field Camp to spend the
following two days at the Monitoring Conference talking about what's
available, how it can be used, what else needs to be done, etc.
If anyone on Bee-L knows of an established, prototype, or emergent
technology for monitoring bees, colonies, and hives that we may have missed
or may be unaware of, please have the lead researcher and/or company
officer contact me off-list at [log in to unmask] or call me on my cell @
406-544-9007.
Frank and I want to hear from anyone, anywhere in the world, who has or may
have a solution that works and benefits bees and beekeepers. I've got
about two more weeks before I need to wrap up the Demonstration and Speaker
lists - so please, ask them to contact me, preferably this coming week. If
they are on our current list, they should have heard from us by now. We
sent out invitations in December, have been adding people over past two
months who weren't on the list for the 3rd International Monitoring
Conference (folks like Combplex).
Keeping with the WAS mandate, these activities are primarily educational.
However, companies with market-ready devices and software will be given the
option of having a exhibitor's booth.
As far as Frank and I know, no one has ever challenged this rapidly growing
industry, aimed at bringing new technological solutions to bees and
beekeeping, so show what they have. And everywhere Frank and I go,
beekeepers, whether hobby with a few colonies or commercial beekeepers
with thousands of colonies, ask: "What's Available", "What Works", What's
the Cost". It's time to see some answers. Come to MT for the Bee Summit,
stay for a Vacation. We're in the Rocky Mountains with great scenery, and
lots of outdoor activities just outside the door from the WAS conference
hotel, the Holiday Inn Downtown, situated on the bank of the Clark-Fork
River. Bring your hiking boots, bicycles, kayaks, fishing gear - there's
trout in the river.
Sorry for the advertisement. We don't make money off of these meeting -
it's non-profit. I am a bit biased about the beauty of my home state.
I'm old enough, that this is probably my last time to put on a major set of
Meetings. I officially retired, with full social security and pension
benefits 8 years ago. I did this dual conference (WAS and 2nd
International Monitoring) in 2014, and I promised myself then that I
wouldn't do another dual conference. But things have gotten interesting in
the past six years.
Fair warning, I've a list of nearly 2000 students who have completed one
or more levels of our UM Online Master Beekeeping Program. And, I've been
on Bee-L since near its inception. I hope to see lots of folks who i only
know from both of these online activities in Montana, so I can meet you
face-to-face.
Thanks, and please send recommendations for presenters/demonstrators.
