I have been using 6 bee cozies for the last two years. My brood chambers
have a 1" hole about three inches above the bottom which provides an
entrance when the bottom board is closed with snow or ice.
A long screw or nail is used to hold the bottom of the cozie above the hole.
I find it helpful to put a 16.25" x 20" x 2" piece of styrofoam above the
inner cover as the supplied piece of insulation is not enough for our
winters. I do not use top entrances in any of my hives - I have 35 - and
they seem to winter well.
