An upper auger hole that has a barrier of solid wood of side bars may not give any indication if bees prefer to leave it open or closed.
I've used a series of 3/4" holes, top to bottom, five along one side of single deep brood boxes with only top bars for over a decade. What I would say from observation is most often they will close off the upper most holes and at times the lowest hole. Not really consistent, every colony is different.
