Re AFB odor. Years ago, due to a truck wreck, we got AFB through the
operation, and wound up burning nearly 80 hives. I identified most by
odor, as I have a very sensitive sense of smell, and can pick up the scent
as we're loading hives onto a truck, unopened, or walking downwind from a
hive. But the hive needs to have a number of infected cells.
But I have also found a couple of apparent AFB infections that lacked the
distinctive odor. What is nearly always a clear sign are the distinctive
caramel-colored melting late-stage larvae or pupae.
