I expect A.I and E.R. Root were referring to the white sweet clover Melilotus alba, as were John Davidson and Eva Crane. In my area there is a lot of volunteer yellow sweet clover which I suspect is M. indica. Maybe soil conditions and climate also influence flavours in honey.

I note that the 1978 edition of ABC & XYZ of Bee Culture dropped all reference to a cinnamon taste in sweet clover (pg 619).

 “In flavor it has a suggestion of vanilla, more pronounced than alfalfa and milder than orange.”

They also drop all mention of a greenish colour.

Thinking:  Taste depends on the edition of Bee Culture.
