Aye, there's the rub. Most of the trials I have seen are not long-term. Maybe the assumption is that the individuals don't live long enough to exhibit long term effects, but certainly colonies could be tracked for a year or two.
The chief problem I see is teasing out cause and effect. So many things contribute to overall colony well being or malaise, it's hard to say which does what. Especially if the hives are moved about.
And if they are not moved about, would that constitute a "realistic" field trial?
