> European bees do have distinct cavity volume preferences and they prefer nest cavity volumes of at least 20 liters, but will sometimes accept cavities of 13 l, while rejecting cavities of 10 l or less volume


Just to add, Seeley suggested that the "dream" cavity size for EHB was about 10 gallons, a bit less than 40 L. He details his work in a really nice presentation on you tube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnnjY823e-w
