I had good luck with a 30deep frame insulated horizontal hive I built as an
experiment, went through 3 winters successfully in West Michigan.
Eventually got ants in the insulation which made the bees testy when I
opened it, but barring the ants was always easy and fast to work with calm
bees as long as I left the front frame or two. Haven’t restocked it since I
moved the apiary, several things I will do different next time (so it
doesn’t get ants and metal for the roof). Think you can still find pics
online if you search coffin hive. I’ve got a lot more lumber dry so it’s
time to get back to some projects.
